106-year old building collapses at dockyard road – Mumbai,India

A portion of Ray Chambers, a 106-year-old building near the Dockyard Road station, collapsed on Saturday morning, hours after the families living in its 75 flats were evacuated. Only three residents were inside during the collapse and all of them were rescued.

MHADA, which had declared the structure dangerous, had been carrying out repair works since Friday morning. When cracks appeared on the building in the evening, fire brigade and MHADA officials asked residents to evacuate.

MHADA public relations officer Vaishali Wagh said, “Since it is a cessed building, MHADA was carrying out repairs. When cracks appeared on Friday evening, we alerted the residents to leave.”

Some residents were gathering their belongings on Saturday morning when the collapse took place. “We rushed downstairs and saw the front portion collapsing like a pack of cards,” said second-floor resident Roshan Fernandes.

Faiz Abdullah, a passerby, said dust at the site limited visibility for nearly 15 minutes after the collapse. “It seemed like thick fog. We couldn’t see anything.”

Five fire engines and ambulances were rushed to the spot. “Three residents were inside gathering their belongings at the time of the collapse. We rescued all of them,” said Uday Tatkare, chief fire officer. Around 30 MHADA workers erecting bamboo supports for the facade also ran to safety, Tatkare added.

Residents said they had repeatedly written to the BMC about instability of their building but had not received any reply. BMC Assistant Municipal Commissioner (ward E) Prakash Patil denied having received any complaint. “MHADA is the agency responsible for carrying out the work and they were doing it. BMC did not receive any letter from residents,” Patil said.
